Essential items needed for fire safety at home
According to the Red Cross Society, if a fire starts in your home, you may have as little as two minutes to escape! During a fire, early warning from a working smoke alarm plus a fire escape plan that has been practised regularly can save lives.
Read this article to find out what are the essential items you need to offer your family peaceful night sleep and best fire protection at home.
Fire Extinguisher
According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), fires caused by dropped light cases were the most common cause (36.7%) of all fire cases in 2019, followed by those due to electrical origin (23.1%).
This implies that Class A and C fires are the most common here in Singapore.
However, do you also know that there are different classes of fire extinguishers used specifically for different causes of fire hazards?
Here are some of the common classes that you should be aware of:
- Class A: For fires resulted from ordinary combustibles (i.e. cloth, wood and paper)
- Class B: For fires caused by flammable liquids (grease, oil)
- Class C: For fires started in electrical appliances
- Class D: For fires resulted from flammable metals
- Class F: For fires started by cooking oils and cooking appliances
Fire extinguishers that are put in place in Singapore, should thus be able to suppress such fires. In fact, the most commonly seen fire extinguishers in places such as schools and offices, are often the Falcon ABC Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers. These extinguishers are SETSCO approved in accordance with Singapore standards and are suitable for Class A, B and C fires. It comes with a set of how-to-use instructions on its body, for easy reference.
Smoke Alarm
If you have a fire, smoke alarms can cut nearly in half your risk of dying in a fire. Smoke alarms sense abnormal amounts of smoke or invisible combustion gases in the air. They can detect both smoldering and flaming fires.
If smoke alarms are not already in place, at a minimum, try to install them on every level of the home and outside each sleeping area. If a fire occurs inside a bedroom, dangerous gases can cause heavier sleep. For the best protection, install interconnected smoke alarms in each bedroom and throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.
Fire Blanket
A fire blanket will come in handy to put out small, contained fires in the home. They are highly flame resistant and can be used by anyone inexperienced and experienced alike in fire safety to put out small fires.
A fire blanket can handle a small Class A or Class F fire (fires started by cooking oil or appliances where you cannot use water).
